Why Light at Our Grotto
Humans have been lighting fires in sacred spots to fuel faith for centuries.
Thus there are places on the planet that are extra special - e.g., those areas of concentration that have advanced the spirits of men and nature.
One of those special places is the Vatican. It is built in the Roman foothills that witnessed the death of Peter, thus it makes sense that the soil infused with the blood of Saint Peter has stood the test of time as the earthly seat and center for His church. Combine this sacred ground with the millions of millions of humans over the ages who have visited, honored, and infused those grounds with their heavenly intentions, and wow - one sacred spot.
Saint Joseph's Grotto is another one of those sacred places that continues to advance the spirits of men and nature.
Accordingly, we invite you to add your intentions to our flickering flames of faith and hope!

Why We Light Votive Candles
By Charles R. Scott
Votive Candles are beautiful especially when lit.
Even unlit, they honorably stand at attention ready to serve and command our respect.
When lit, Votive Candles are a sign of hope, a sign of peace, a sign of honored communication with the Divine, a sacred prayer for Grace, a trust in God, a petition and motion to advance the Highest Good, as He sees it (and as we are allowed to understand it).
Perhaps Votive Candles are also even symbolic of Jesus, the Light of our world and Savior who cuts through all darkness with His flame of unending Love for each and every one of us.
At the heart of lighting a Votive Candle is really a prayer. It is also a symbolic reminder that as the candle's burning flame flickers forth so to do our prayers and intentions rise to the heavens.
There is an old saying about being in a cave of darkness and how it is better to light one candle then to curse the darkness a thousand times. And how with even one humble candle burning, the flickering flame cannot be concealed by the surrounding darkness.
Accordingly, Catholics light Votive Candles as part of faith, believing that as long as the candle burns the prayer is constant.
And as a photographer with a star filter on my favorite lens, actual lit Votive Candles are perhaps most beautiful en mass – in multitude and plural. Perhaps further symbolizing our human connectedness, the beauty of our coming together in His Grace and sharing our hopes for better tomorrows and gratitude for blessings received.
